Big Laguna Loop via Nobel Canyon Trailhead -
Laguna Mountains
Beginner XC -
We start at the Nobel Canyon Trailhead on Sunrise Highway in Cleveland National Forest
PLEASE NOTE AN ADVENTURE PASS IS REQUIRED FOR PARKING!
Adventure passes may be purchased at sporting good stores and cost $5/day or $30/year.
From the Nobel Canyon Trailhead we cross the street and ride a gentle climb. At the top
we ride along a beautiful Alpine. The trail is AWESOME, twisting in and out of the alpine forest,
through grasslands, over rocks and fun dips. It is a fantastic beginner ride everyone can enjoy.
Close to the mid-point we'll see Big Laguna Lake. Sadly, it's nothing spectacular due to summer cows
stomping all vegetation. It's sad to see such a pristine location trampled under hundreds of hoofs.
Nevertheless, we'll continue on to the ‘Lake in the Woods'.
Like Big Laguna Lake, this was a beautiful pristine pond a few years ago. There were cattails, ducks,
birds and all sorts of varied water plants in the small pond. That changed when they let the cows in.
It's not as trampled as Big Laguna Lake, but the before and after is dramatic. Just before the Lake in
the Woods will be our devo. We'll go to a very cool Rock formation which has caves and Indian grinding
bowls. If you look closely, you may also find Indian Pottery Shards. Going back is the same, as this
is an ‘out and back' ride. The elevation gain is minor with gentle rolling hills.
NOTE Helmets are MANDATORY on all RockMTB rides NO EXCEPTIONS.
This includes EVERYONE! The person who left their helmet on the table at home... Please dont put us in the unfortunate position of not letting you ride. Besides, you will not be allowed on the mountain without one. We care deeply about everyones health and have seen too many examples of why helmets are needed.
What to bring:
1. HELMET no helmet, NO RIDE, no exceptions.
2. WATER at lease 50-80 oz.
3. FOOD - this is a relatively short ride but we recommend some "food/energy" bars as a snack.
4. TUBES - At least 1 or 2.
5. CAMERA optional but it is spectacular scenery. We will be taking pictures and helmet camming the ride.
6. SUNSCREEN.
7. SUNGLASSES.
8.ADVENTURE PASS REQUIRED TO PARK YOU CAR. You can buy a day pass for $5 at sporting goods stores or an annual pass for $30. Purchase your pass BEFORE the ride we will not be driving near a location to purchase them.
8. PRAYER
Directions:
Take 8 East going past the Cuyamaca exit. Continue on 8 a few more miles and pass the Pine Valley exit.
The next exit is Sunrise Highway – take this exit and go left (North) up Sunrise Highway.
Continue up Sunrise Highway for several miles. You will crest the hill and pass through a
VERY small town – there is a market and ranger station here (if you need an Adventure Pass –
though it may not be opened). Continue a few more miles passing the ‘Big Laguna Campground’
on your left. About 1-2 more miles on your right (right after a Cow Grate in the road) is a
large parking lot. This is the Nobel Canyon trailhead – park here.

Cuyamaca Epic Ride! -
Cuyamaca State Park - Near the Laguna Mnt.s - East San Diego
Strong Intermediate Ride
This is an all day ride - 2,100 in 20 miles!
Strong Intermediate rides usually are long, have significant climbing with some technical singletrack and downhill sections.
Cuyamaca State Park is one of Southern Californias jewels. The park has a combination of California Scrub Oak, deep thick green forests, lush fields, alpine forests, and awesome singletrack/fire roads.
We start at the parking lot (immediately after the Green Valley Campground) and quickly ride onto single track. After a few miles we cross route 79 going past the Park HQ. This section is fire road and takes us to Soap Stone, the first real climb (15 minute spin). At the top of Soap Stone are several miles of fast trails twisting and turning everywhere. The trail drops us onto another fire road and we then hook up onto route 79 again.
After a half mile on 79 we start the granddaddy of climbs -Middle Peak. This is a long, ruthless, never-ending grind over 2.5 miles long and about 1,000. It is not technical (the whole climb is rideable) however it is LONG (25-40 minutes, nonstop). There is an EASIER alternative route for those who wish to cut the climbing in half. With all climbs comes the reward AMAZING DOWNHILL! Once we exit the forest we will have the devotional/lunch on a field overlooking the ocean the view here is breathtaking. This is also the location where will meet with the other riders who bypassed the Middle Peak climb.
Back on the trail we pass the Keebler Elf Tree and start our final climb. It is only a few hundred feet and relatively easy (all depends on how much leg you have). At the top is a spectacular trail down the mountain. Miles and miles of downhill with beautiful scenery go rushing by. This is DEFINITLY the reward for all the sweat. Several downhill miles later we arrive at our cars.
This is one of my favorite beautiful trails. There are few technical sections and lots of stunning scenery. All climbs are doable yet there is 2,100 elevation gain in twenty miles not an easy ride.
Please no newbies on this ride - you will not have a good time.
NOTE Helmets are MANDATORY on all RockMTB rides NO EXCEPTIONS.
This includes EVERYONE! The person who left their helmet on the table at home... Please dont put us in the unfortunate position of not letting you ride. We care deeply about everyones health and have seen too many examples of why helmets are needed.
What to bring:
1. Helmet no helmet, NO RIDE, no exceptions.
PLEASE DO NOT FORGET YOUR... yes thats right, you guesed it, your HELMET!
2. WATER at lease 70-100 oz!!! It may get VERY HOT this is an all day ride.
3. FOOD - this is a 20 mile ride with 2,100 elevation gain. The devotional location is awe-inspiring! There is a lot of climbing and you will be very hungry..
4. TUBES
5. CAMERA optional but it is spectacular scenery. We will be taking pictures and helmet camming the ride.
6. SUNSCREEN.
7. SUNGLASSES. 8. PRAYER
Directions:
TIt takes roughly 45 minutes from 8 and SDSU (College Avenue). Take 8 East going past Viejas Casino. Continue on 8 and take the Route 79/Cuyamaca State Park Exit going North (left). Stay on Route 79 (it veers to the left after a few miles) going past the Cuyamaca State Park/Campground (a.k.a. Green Valley Campground on the left). A mile or so after the campground will be a LARGE parking lot on the right on the edge of a big field. This is the first real parking lot past the campground. There will most likely be horse trailers here park and look for the RockMTB banner. You went too far if you hit the lake turn around.

DALEY RANCH
STRONG Intermediate Ride
This only one of many rides at Daley Ranch.
Daley Ranch is located on the northern border of the City of Escondido. The ranch was settled by Robert Daley in 1869. The current ranch house was built in 1928, primarily as a place for the Daley family to get away from their Jamul residence. The land was destined to become one of the largest housing tracts ever developed, when the City of Escondido purchased the land from the Shay Homes company in 1996. The land was opened as park in April 1997.
Total distance is 20 miles with few technical sections and an elevation gain about 1,500-1,800'. Just about every part is rideable with stunning views everywhere. Daley is all about rolling hills, with very few flat sections. There are some seriously steep, long, arduous climbs. Of course when you climb, you are rewarded with downhill. Just about every climb is on a fire road with the downhill's being mostly single track. Still, if you are not good at climbing it can be very long and difficult. Please only ride if you are a good climber.
Daley Ranch is located in Northern Escondido and at the top of a mountainous area. We will be riding up and down several ridges, while looking down into Escondido, Spring Valley, and even the Pacific. 70% of the trail is fire road, with the remained 30% SWEET, AWESOME single track.
What to bring:
1. Helmet, of course.
2. Water, water, water!!!! Bring at least 100oz, you will need it.
3. Food.
4. Sunscreen.
5. Proper clothing it can be very warm or quite cool this time of year.
6. Prayer.
Directions:
About 40 minutes from San Diego State University and 8. To get to the trailhead take El Norte Parkway off of I-15 at the northern end of Escondido. Head East about 4 miles until you reach La Honda Drive. Take a left on La Honda. You can follow the signs to Lake Dixon from the freeway, since the trailhead is at the lake entrance. Thomas Guide page 1110 C3. There is a parking lot on the left side before you enter Lake Dixon, park there.

Elfin Forest
Advanced XC Ride
See the Elevation Chart
As written by RockMTB Leader Mike Maio - Living near North County this is
by far my favorite local (within 15 miles from my gym) ride in San Diego
Proper.
In a nutshell this trail is very challenging from a cross-country
standpoint. The climbs are strenuous and technical but for an experienced
rider everything on this ride is climbable if you have the legs for it. If
you master this trail you will be able to out climb anyone in an actual
technical trail situation.
The down hills are fast and fun with lots of switchbacks but are only as
treacherous as the speed in which you ride them at.
We will start the ride on the "Way Up Trail" climbing without much of a
warm up. It is best to go slow at first and take it easy going just fast
enough to keep your bike up right. This is because from time to time there
are technical and steep sections that you want to have the leg power and
speed to make it with out having to dab or hike your bike. Keep track of
how many times, if any, you have to put your foot down if you can make it
all the way to the top (1.5 miles) past the many switchbacks without having
to dab you can call yourself an expert climber!
Once we have reached the top we will proceed to a picnic area with a great
view of the Olivenhain Reservoir. This is where we will have our
Devotional. There is no real need to carry a lot of water with you up till
this point as this area has access to fresh drinking water.
We will then proceed up a small climb (.3 miles) to the top of Mt. Israel
where there are spectacular views of the coast and ocean. From there we
will bomb down the "Equine Incline", which is some fun fast downhill with
some baby heads and switchbacks in the mix for about a 1.5 miles until we
climb out, up a moderate to steep incline for about a 1 mile.
This will bring us back to the general area we had the Devotional in. From
there we will head up "Tykes Hike" (.25miles) to the "Chaparral Trail"
(.3 miles) back to the top of Mt. Israel and then down the "Cielo Trail"
(.25 miles) and then down a steep fire road to the "Mariposa Trail" (.25
miles) which proceeds down a steep staircase with a very short but steep
climb out to the "Tykes Hike" which will once again lead us to the
Devotional area.
There is only one more thing to do now and that's BOMB way down the
1.5-mile "Way Up Trail" which ends up right down at the parking lot.
In this entire ride will only be about 12 or so miles but with about 2000'
of climbing at pretty much sea level. And I should mention it's not
2000' of fire road climbing, its VERY TECHNICAL CLIMBING so that means
ADVANCED XC RIDERS ONLY!!!!

6. SUNSCREEN.
7. SUNGLASSES.

GOOSEBERRY MESA - Zion National Park in Utah -
SLICK ROCK RIDING GOOSEBERRY MESA IN SOUTHERN UTAH!!!
Biking off-road within Zion National Park is strictly forbidden, but that's ok. Stroll through this divine gallery of rock towers, weeping alcoves, and sunlight-eluding canyons, then pedal your mountain bike outside the park's boundary to Gooseberry Mesa. Located 7 miles south of Rockville, which is 3 miles west of Springdale and the park's entrance, this ride offers an opportunity for you to pedal free from RV-clogged roads and tourist-saturated trails to points where solitude rings with deafening silence.
The main dirt road that leads out the center of Gooseberry Mesa is a fine novice to intermediate ride--10 miles out-and-back and flat as a pancake. But recently, a new trail system has been developed that incorporates technical slickrock and bonafide singletrack. Although the slickrock sections are not the free- flowing, catch-a-wave expanses of the famed Slickrock Bike Trail in Moab, the rock on Gooseberry is every bit as challenging and requires adept skills to clean the hundreds of audacious stunts. Between the rock expanses, though, are short, tasty sections of dreamy singletrack weaving through juniper, pinyon, ponderosa, and manzanita. This is real singletrack--soft, loamy, and carpeted with pine needles--not the runaway bike ramps-cum-sand traps of the Moab variety. Thus, Gooseberry is the best of mountain biking. While you are focused on the task of navigating the trail's paint-on-rock markers and cleaning its many obstacles, the encompassing scenery is constantly vying for your attention. Colossal sandstone monuments and shadow-filled gorges can be seen framing Zion Canyon from numerous locations. Temples of the Virgin rise as sacred shrines and the Kolob Canyons blaze in the setting sun. The route's terminus, Gooseberry Point, overlooks the Virgin River's scenic complexity. There are fault-bound mesas separated by deep valleys and vermillion escarpments carved into fanciful convolutions and cockscomb-like ridges. The distant Pine Valley Mountains Wilderness interrupts the arid motif with a swollen alpine acclivity.
Gooseberry Mesa can be accessed from Zion National Park by taking Bridge Road south from Rockville (3 miles west of the park) or by taking UT 57 southeast of Hurricane.
By Gregg Bromka, author of The Mountain Biker's Guide to Utah.
A word from Kevin Loomis:
The Gooseberry Mesa ride outside of Zion National Park in Utah... Ive ridden it a few times and may even be able to get some locals to ride with us. Last time, I was introduced and rode with the guys who built the trails 15 years ago. Ill see what I can do.
Gooseberry Mesa is similar to Moab with lots of slick rock. The main difference being less crowds and an easier drive. The trails range from beginner to expert. Check out the link below for video footage, go to the Gooseberry Mesa videos, there are two. We will have three to four days of riding with two days for travel. Since we are camping in Zion, you can also take the day off and explore the park if you desire. This is Sylvias and my favorite park. If you can get the time off, this is a MUST GO.

Lake Morena - << EPIC >> -
This is one of our favorite OPEN trails in San Diego County. This ride is for ADVANCED riders only that are strong climbers. Hope to see hard-core XC riders out there!!!
As a ministry, it is our desire to serve everyone. We have Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced (Cross-Country, Downhill and Free-ride) rides. Morena is for ADVANCED Cross-Country riders only. This ride is NOT for Downhillers, Freeriders nor is it for Intermediates. This is for the hardcore XC rider that loves to ride all day, with awesome elevation gain. Morena is extreme with a vertical ACCENT of 3,200 in 20 miles. The singletrack is awesome but not very technical. Therefore, if you are NOT a GREAT climber please ride with us another time.
We start at the base of the Kiernan trail. We ride a few miles up a dirt road and then cut off to the Espinosa trail (all singletrack). Sage Brush Ravine is a popular race at Morena (the course does NOT include the Espinosa or Spur trail). This is where the climbing really starts. Espinosa climbs to a saddle between two mountains; we then take a fire road to Spur Trail. This is a multi-use trail with dirt bikes, hikers and mountain bikes. The corners are banked and snake around the contours of the mountain dropping to another fire road. We climb the fire road to the Four Corners. This puts us back on the Sage Brush race course and is the first bailout point for riders who may have misjudged their abilities you will know if you have! We now take the Wrangler trail which has more amazing single track for several miles. At the halfway mark well have a devotional on a granite outcropping overlooking Mexico. At the end of Wrangler is the final bailout point. We continue on a fire road to the only hike a bike section. We are now on another ridge and drop down a fire road into a beautiful valley full of oaks, fields and flowers. Our last climb is out of the valley and back to Four Corners. The best is saved for last which is the Kiernan trail. The trail is several miles of fast downhill singletrack to our cars.
Tired just reading this???? There is a reason for calling certain rides Epics!!! R U Tough enough? If so, see you out there!

Los Penasquitos
Los Penasquitos - Poway - San Diego
Family, Easy, Beginner Ride!!!!!!
Has your spouse or significant other questioned your rides and wanted to go? Are there often time crunches when you must choose between riding and being with your family? Perhaps, youre new to mountain biking and wonder what its about. Maybe you have always wanted to go on a RockMTB ride but were concerned about your skill level. If any of these questions/concerns pertain to you, THIS IS YOUR RIDE!!!! On the other hand, if you are a hardcore climbing/descending, cross country geek that looks at dirt as an anticoagulant, Some other "EPIC" ride is for you not this one!
This will truly be an EASY EASY EASY (did I say Easy?) ride. We encourage you to bring your spouses and children. It does not matter what type of mountain bike you have, any will do. The ride will start on the eastern end ofLos Penasquitos Canyon (at the end of the softball fields). This trail is actually a well groomed fire road which goes in and out of the forest and fields. There is a stream off to the side which the children may explore on the ride back. Most of the ride is flat with the last section a moderate rise to water falls. This will be the halfway point and location for the devotional. The trail actually continues several miles further, but that section has more hills and may not be suitable (for this ride). After the devotional, the kids may play/explore in the water and do children things. There will be stopping and looking at flowers, or looking at whatever is interesting. If you desire a thoroughly relaxing time in a beautiful setting with friends go on this ride.
NOTE Helmets are MANDATORY on all RockMTB rides NO EXCEPTIONS.
This includes children, and the person who left their helmet on the table. Please dont put us in the unfortunate position of not letting you ride. We care deeply about everyones health and have seen too many examples of why helmets are needed.

MARTHA'S GROVE / MEDINA
Marthas/Medina Ride East Co. San Diego
Intermediate Ride - THE "MARTHA'S" SECTION OF THIS TRAIL IS CLOSED
15 miles around 1,000 elevation gain - Click here to view the elevation chart
This is one of my FAVORITE local rides (starts inSantee) and for good reason. This trail has a just about everything, beautiful So-Cal scenery, lush valleys, sweet single track, wide track, thick trees, easy and technical riding, cliffs, a drop off and is only ten minutes from my house. We start near Santee Lakes and ride into Sycamore Canyon. The first part is the most technical with lots of little climbs and rocks. After 2 ? miles, Sycamore Canyon opens up which is currently green and lush. The trail continues as wide track to the entrance of Gooden Ranch (home of Marthas Grove). This is where there will be bailouts. For those who may be having difficulty, they will continue up the fire road and wait for us. The rest will climb single track on the side of the valley. We join up and continue on a nice climb to the staging area. At the top is the entrance to Marthas Grove trail, one of my favorites in So-Cal. Marthas climbs a bit more with views of the valley below. After a few minutes, the trails crests hold onto your handle bars for fast single track is in front! There is one section some people may wish to walk, a nice drop off with a sharp turn at the bottom (best part of the ride). Shortly after we come to Marthas Grove, a nicely shaded section where the devotional will take place. The trail continues twisting, turning and gently decending to a fire road. We then hit more single track and go back to the entrance of Gooden Ranch. This is an Out and Back ride, meaning we go out the way we came in. On the way back, I know additional single track well take.
This trail is rideable for most people and does have bail out points in a few areas. The first half of the ride will be a long gentle climb to Marthas Grove. It is not hard, but is constant. There are also river bed crossings with rocky sections. Nothing too technical, but you should be somewhat experienced riding over rocks. Most of the trail is smooth and fun. The truly technical sections are few and walkable. THIS IS NOT A RIDE TO BRING A NEWBIE ON (thats why we have beginner rides). This is a 16 mile Intermediate ride; a newbie would be overwhelmed and drastically slow the group down. They dont need much experience, but do need some.
What to bring:
1. Helmet, of course. No helmet, No ride (we just love that head of yours!!!)
2. Someone that has not been on an Rock MTB ride. (For this ride, no beginners)
3. Water
4. Prayer.

They vary tremendously depending on where you live. The bottom line is you need to get on Mast Blvd in Santee next to West Hills High School (near the dump). Mast blvd is off of 52 near the Eastern terminus. I would recommend looking on a map and locating Mast Blvd and 52 in Santee. Once you are on Mast, continue east passing the dump (left side) and West Hills High School (right side). At the first light is Medina take a left. Continue through the stop signs to the end. The entrance (four metal posts in the ground) is on the left park (youll see many cars). PLEASE KEEP YOUR VOICES LOW, THIS IS A NEIGHBORHOOD. Lots of mountain bikers park here and we wish to retain our welcome. If you need help email us mountainbike@therocksandiego.org (where you are coming from) and Ill get you there.

MARTHA'S GROVE w VALLEY LOOP / CARDIAC HILL / RoCkY RiDge
East Co. San Diego
Advanced Ride -
20 miles around 2,000 elevation gain
This is one of my FAVORITE local rides (starts in Santee). This trail has a just about everything, beautiful So-Cal scenery, lush valleys, sweet single track, high steep singletrack on a long ridge, wide track, thick trees, easy/hard/technical riding, cliffs, a drop off and is only ten minutes from my house. This time were adding extra miles and elevation to make a favorite local loop truly EPIC!
We start near Santee Lakes and ride into Sycamore Canyon. The first part is slightly technical with lots of little climbs and rocks. After a few miles, Sycamore Canyon opens up into a green and lush valley. From here we will add the Valley Loop portion of the trail. After riding up and down the perimeter of the valley, the trail continues up Sycamore Canyon on newly created singletrack all the way to the entrance of Gooden Ranch (home of Marthas Grove).
We will climb single track along the side of the valley and continue on a nice climb to the staging area. At the top is the entrance to Marthas Grove trail, one of my favorite trails in So-Cal. The trail continues twisting, turning and gently descending to a fire road. From here we turn left to Cardiac an aptly named section. It is straight up to another staging area with your heart pounding out of your chest at the top then entrance to the RoCkY RiDgE!
Just like Cardiac is aptly named, so is the RoCkY RiDgE. The trail continues south along the ridge eventually dropping back down to the beautiful valley we rode in. Before last years fires, the ridge had many rocks and was quick. After the fires, the ridge has become VERY rocky and extremely technical. The views from up top are amazing. Right before dropping into the valley the trail gets interesting and is the most technical of the ride.
Once back on the valley floor its a few miles back to the car. We may take a different way back hugging the hills or we may not depends on how everyone feels.
This ride is truly for Advanced riders only. While many parts are easy, the combination of all the sections will challenge the best of riders. If you are a weak climber, this is not a ride youd enjoy. Cardiac would quickly become a name you may take literally. Furthermore this is absolutely NOT A RIDE TO BRING NEWBIES ON (thats why we have beginner rides). This is a 20+mile Advanced ride; a newbie would be overwhelmed and miserable.
What to bring:
1. Helmet, of course. No helmet, No ride (we just love that head of yours!!!)
2. Someone that has not been on an Rock MTB ride. (For this ride, no beginners)
3. Water
4. Prayer.

Mission Trails - Quick Intermediate -
+ 7 miles, several hundred feet elevation
April 6th
Arrive at 8:45, Ride at 9:00, done by 11:00
Central San Diego
For those of you who need to do OTHER things Saturday, THIS RIDE IS FOR YOU. We meet at the end of Claremont Mesa Blvd and immediately hit the trial. We quickly go onto a fire road and then drop down to some fast single track to Calle De Vida. From there we climb a hill with views of the ocean, downtown and Point Loma (on a clear day you can see the island off the coast). Back down the hill on some technical single track to the West Rim Trail. We take this for a mile or so and drop down to the four corners. From there we continue to 52 through a beautiful valley and climb out on the edge of North Fortuna Mountain.
IT IS NOW TIME FOR THE TECHNICAL PART OF THE RIDE! Lots of rocks, ruts, steep drops and sharp turns with fast climbs are on this part of the ride! We take this back to the four corners and continue on E-Ticket a more tame yet awesome single track section. E-Ticket ends and we continue to Sycott Wash, another beautiful single track in a broad Valley. The devotional will take place under a canopy of California Oak Trees. NOBLE CANYON
25+ miles w/ 2,000' gain (shuttle)
Check out the photo Gallery for many past trips,
here's just one of them.
Also Check out this video from Nobel Canyon.
This is one of our FAVORITE local trails in San Diego! However, please be aware this is an ADVANCED Cross Country Epic ride. We are adding extra miles with real elevation gain making this a XC ride WITH downhill. For downhillers, unless you can climb like a monkey, this ride is not for you. We are keeping the pace quick and encourage all serious XC riders to join us. Due to a demand by a few 'hardcore' people, we will be splitting this into TWO rides! There will be a climbing ride and a shuttle ride!
For the people climbing, we will leave the Nobel Canyon trailhead and climb the fireroad to Indian Creek. From here we'll meet up with the group on the Nobel Canyon trail. The climb is VERY steep and only for hardcore, advanced climbers.
For those don't want to climb - AS MUCH, we do part shuttle and part climbing. We meet at the Nobel Canyon trailhead at 8:45 sharp. YOU WILL NEED AND ADVENTURE PASS TO PARK!!! PLEASE BUY YOUR PASS BEFORE ARRIVING. Passes can be purchased at sporting goods stores, A-16 and REI.
We shuttle and park at the kiosk when entering Cleveland National Forest off Sunrise. From here we ride up a fireroad and then take awesome singletrack to the best part of the Laguna loop. Fast, swoopy singletrack with views of the ocean. Eventually, we'll either continue to the Nobel Trailhead OR we'll exit Big Laguna Campground. This is the potential bypass junction due to the fire. Either way, we'll soon be on the Nobel trail for the downhill technical section meeting up with the climbers. This is where true downhill handling skills excel. The devotional will be at Indian Creek junction. Towards the bottom we continue the Cross Country theme climbing up to a saddle. From here it is a steep, technical drop back to the cars.
Once again, this ride is for advanced riders who love to climb. By picking the ride which best fits your skills, you and the other riders will be guaranteed an awesome time!
What to bring:
1. Helmet. No helmet, no ride.
2. CLEVELAND NATIONAL FOREST PASS!
3. Water, 100oz is a good idea.
4. Gloves, sunscreen (will get warm), sunglasses.
5. Tubes! Two would be a good idea.
6. Food. RockMTB favorite is PB&J. You WILL get hungry.
7. Your prepped bike. Go over it the night before and dont forget to lube your chain and pump the tires.
8. Prayer
Directions:
From SDSU and 8, it takes roughly +-55 minutes to the Lower Nobel Canyon Trailhead. Take 8 East passing Viejas. Continue on 8 until you see the Pine Valley Exit – Pine Valley Road, go left toward town. At the intersection take a left (Old Highway 80). Go about 1 mile and turn right onto Pine Creek Road. Pass a Christian Bible Camp on your left and a little farther on look for the Nobel Canyon Trailhead sign on your right. Once in the parking lot, look for the RockMTB banner.
Carpool:
Take I-8 Exit Grossmont Center Drive - take a left going north. Take a left Murray Drive (light). Park at the park and ride on your left. Arrive no later than 7:30am.

NORTH LAKE HODGES - Click here to view the elevation chart
We are meeting in the same parking area as the San Pasqual ride. However whereas San Pasqual went East into the farmland, we are going WEST around LakeHodges. This is a beautiful trail that everyone should ride at least once. The trail starts off smooth/fast going under Highway 15. It quickly becomes a fire road with small climbs and drops. There are a few technical sections with rocks and a slightly steep pitch (one area). These areas are SHORT and can be easily walked if necessary. What makes this a strong beginner ride is the slight climbing and occasional rocks on the path. This is what makes it fun for the more advanced riders too! The trail joins up with the Lake Hodges Park, and thereafter becomes single track. As the trail goes around the lake, it gets closer to the shore and weaves in and around trees. There are a lot of short up and down sections twisting everywhere. I expect to hear a lot of whooping in this section! The trail ends near a beautiful picnic area overlooking theLake. We will stop here for lunch with the devotional. This is and OUT and BACK ride, meaning we turnaround and go BACK the way we came! I am not positive on the total mileage, but 10-12 miles sounds about right. Lets get out there!!!!
What to bring:
1. Helmet, of course. No helmet, No ride
2. Seasonal clothing.
3. Food.
4. Water - at least 50 oz, 80 oz is better.
5. Dont forget to prep your bike the night before. Pump air in the tires (40-45 psi), lube the chain, and test the brakes.
6. Spare tube or patch kit
7. Prayer
Directions:
Directions are very easy. Take I-15 (South of Escondido) exit Via Rancho Parkway East (LakeHodgesexit). Take a quick right (after Gas Station) onto Sunset Drive; go to the end and park. There is a parking lot for both the Lake Hodges and San Pasqual Valley trail. Please be at least 10 minutes early 8:20AM.

RAMONA LOOP 1
This is the usuall ride... The ride started at Steves old house and quickly goes onto the trail. The trail continues in a field through a valley surrounded by mountains. Toward the end of the valley, the trail crosses a road and starts a nice technical climb. After a mile or so of rolling up & downs, one last short hill climb up an old fire road. Finally we are at what I call the top. With the valley stretching out below, the trail gets pretty steep in some sections now the fun starts! Lots of twisty single track with several technical areas. There is this one area with two drops to a fire road, one very steep and the other just steep. Which one are YOU going down??? The trail continues as rolling, tight, single track for several miles with climbs and fast descents. During one section you are in this beautiful lush valley with grass and California Live Oaks, very nice. The end of the ride levels out with fast single track, some along the road, some in the woods. Total mileage approximately 12-15 miles. Skill level STRONG Intermediate. There is a lot of climbing, and several difficult technical sections. PLEASE NO BEGINNERS!!!
Says
This ride can have many alternate routes, depending on skill level and time. All them have some climbing and range from fairly easy to extreme "hike-a-bike". And I don't mean "push-a-bike". There is some of that on some of the routes as well. The distance can range from 7 miles that can be done in under a hour, to a grueling 15 miles that can take 2-3 hours. The longer routes include a 20 min. "hike-a-bike", on foot, with your bike slung over your back for some sections. Up the side of a small mtn. you go... Why all this hard work? The exercise! Of course, and by a rewarding 1.5 mile, ridge-running decent down some cool single track. Finishing with more fast easy single track for an awsome cool down.
There are many miles of trails out here that I have not ridden yet. I will continue to explore new and ever-changing routes. Keep on eye on the homepage for any updates and newly discovered trails. BTW - If anyone is interested in doing some of this riding mid week, I would be happy to have you join me. I usually ride 3-4 times a week in the afternoon for an hour or so. (this is my time at the gym.) During the summer I will also be organizing some "nite rides". AWSOME! God Bless and I hope to see ya soon.
What to bring:
1. Helmet Always mandatory.
2. Warm weather clothing.
3. Food.
4. Water - at least 50 oz, 80 oz is better.
5. Dont forget to prep your bike the night before. Pump air in the tires (40-45 psi), lube the chain, and test the brakes.
6. Prayer.
Directions:
Highway 8 to El Cajon, take CA-67 North. After a few miles at the end of the freeway, turn RIGHT onto WILLOW RD. Turn LEFT at the next light onto Ashwood Road, follow for a mile (or so) then at the stop sign continue straight and it becomes WILDCAT CANYON RD go approx. 14miles to the end (passing Barona Casino). San Juan Trail
Strong Intermediate and Advanced Riders
For VERY strong climbers, you will be going up the trail. The rest of us will be shuttling. Even with the shuttle, this is NOT for downhillers, there is still a lot of climbing.
Many of you guys have been itching for a nice shuttle ride and others a good hard climb, the San Juan trail is one the best in Southern California. Located in Southern Orange County in national forest land, we'll meet at the lower trailhead and shuttle up to the campground for some awesome XC, All-Mountain fun. For those of you who want to climb, another group will be climbing from the trailhead, both groups will meet at Lunch Rock. The climb is long, arduous and only for the true XC hardcore climber.
For the people shuttling, part of the ride has some climbing and the downhill sections are not rough, therefore DH bikes are NOT recommended. An 'all-mountain' bike would be perfect. The trail is fast, steep and loose in some sections next to open cliffs. Total ride from the top is roughly 11-12 miles with maybe a couple hundred feet of combined climbing and 2,700' of decent.
NOTE: THIS TRAIL IS DANGEROUS WITH STEEP DROP-OFFS TO THE SIDES and HAS NARROW SWITCHBACKS. PLEASE ONLY STRONG INTERMEDIATES AND ADVANCED RIDERS.
Check some pics from a previous ride.
What to bring:
Helmet No helmet, no ride.
Gloves.
Shin and elbow guards are a good idea.
Water.
Food.
Prepped Bike. Lube the chain and check your tires
Prayer
Directions to San Juan:
Drive south on I 5, exit on Ortega Highway (74). Travel east about 12.5 miles. Turn left on the dirt road just before the Ranger station. The Trailhead will be on your right in about one mile. Parking is near the grove of trees, look for the RockMTB banner.

Santa Ana River Trail - San Bernardino Mnts.
30 miles, 3,000++
Carpool at 5:45am, Leave at 6:00am
Plan on being gone ALL DAY!
Get ready for the best Epic Ride in Southern California Santa Ana River Trail!
Please, no newbies OR Intermediates OR Downhillers on this ride - you will not have a good time. ONLY HARDCORE CROSS COUNTRY (XC) RIDERS ARE INVITED!!!! If you are wondering if this ride is for you, then it is most likely not! This is the hardest most strenuous ride of the ministry. It is not fair to you or the other riders if an unqualified person shows. You will be exhausted and the other riders will be forced to ride at a slow agonizing pace. We apologize for the firm tone, however some of our past rides had people show who were not qualified. They were devastated, and the rest of the group was bored. This is why the ministry has rides for ALL levels. By riding at or near your level, everyone enjoys the ride.
This is truly one of the most spectacular trails in So-Cal. Its roughly 30 miles (out and back) of amazing single track in the San Bernardino Mountains off highway 38. We start out near a store, climb a short fire road and then shoot UP & DOWN steep, technical, sheer, single track for roughly 15 miles. At the end, we turn around and go back, bypassing the last part of the trail with a LONG, HOT, EXPOSED, CLIMB up a fireroad. The trail is steep with drop-offs and lot of switchbacks. Most of the trail is in high alpine forest with LOTS OF climbing (3,000+). We should arrive around 8:15-8:30 at the trailhead and be done between 12:00 2:00.
PLEASE NOTE AN ADVENTURE PASS IS REQUIRED, purchase it in advance. On our way back to San Diego, I know an awesome Mexican fast food place to satisfy any hunger.
To REPEAT, this is an ADVANCED ONLY Cross Country ride. The singletrack is fast and sweet, but with the long duration plus climbing makes this is a butt-whooper of a ride.
Make sure you bring LOTS OF WATER and food!!!! At the end (after a long climb), there is a campground with water available. There is NO WATER before that. I know a few people who were dehydrated due to underestimating their water needs. I am bringing 100oz plus a water bottle filled with Cytomax.
1. Helmet, no helmet no ride.
2. Tubes - two
3. Food power gel, goo, PB & J is good. YOU WILL BE EXTREMELY HUNGRY!
4. Water 100oz AT LEAST! Cytomax or Gatorade is a great idea to avoid cramping. It most likely get baking hot toward the end of the ride. I am bringing another water bottle just in case.
5. Sunscreen AND BUG REPELLENT. There are a lot of annoying bugs on this trail.
6. Camera I will attempt to helmet cam this ride, but personal pictures are always a positive.
7. Adventure Pass!
8. PRAYER Please pray for us (and your family) even if you are not going... This can NEVER be overstated. THANK YOU. Please pray ON MONDAY for no Spiritual Attack. I have been getting whacked on several rides right BEFORE the ride. Please pray for all the leaders and riders to remain healthy, for us to have the Holy Spirit guide us, and for no mechanicals.
Carpool:
We are meeting in the McDonalds Parking Lot off of Aero Drive and 15, near highway 8. Take 15 to the Aero Drive Exit West. At the main Intersection take a left and then your first left into the parking lot. Look for the RockMTB Banner near McDonalds. If you want to go, but cannot drive no problem, just show up! Make sure you arrive at 5:45am or earlier - we leave at 6:00AM sharp. This is an all day ride; expect to get back between 5-7PM.
Directions:
Take 15 North to the 215. Take 215 to 10 going East. After several miles, take the University East Exit in Redlands. Go under the freeway, through two stop signs, at the next stop light is Lugonia (Route 38) take a right. Stay on Route 38 climbing up the mountain for 20-30 minutes. Please note, there is an intersection along the way, stay left on 38 going towards Angelus Oaks. We are parking and riding from Angelus Oaks. There is a restaurant (may be closed), a post office and small store on the left in Angelus Oaks go a half a mile past it and park in the first parking lot on the left. Look for the RockMTB Banner.
We are leaving San Diego at 6:00 SHARP and should be at the parking lot around 8:15. The ride should start around 8:30. If you are running behind, call me at 619/501-4567 as early as possible. I am not sure how cell coverage is up there and may not be able to hear you now. If you call earlier, we will wait or meet you at another junction of the trail if youre running late.
I hope to see many of you ADVANCED XC ONLY riders out there!
Please let me know if you are going, in order to coordinate the carpooling.

SOUTH LAKE HODGES
Brian Frank Says
Lake Hodges is exactly as I remembered. An excellent beginner and/or intermediate ride. This could also be a strong intermediate ride depending on what kind of butt-whooping people would like!! But we could save that for another day.
Lake Hodges (south side of the dry lake bed) has a little bit of everything: cruising double track, sweet single track, and quick short hills. Whether youre just starting out or an experienced rider, this is fun for everyone. At one point you'll be riding by the dry lake bed on a nice grassy single track, this scenery is not a common sight in Southern California, you'd almost think you were in another state. You can then find yourself riding over small creeks and will then see a small 10 foot waterfall. Then there will be the ROCK, this is one of my most favorite playgrounds, it reminds of the pictures I see in Moab. This is an excellent place to test your technical skills. For the intermediate riders, there are fairly steep hills and single track trails to climb, or walk which I sometimes do depending on whether I ate my Wheaties or not. The payoff coming back down is worth it! This is the best time of year to take on Lake Hodges as the summer can reach up to 90 degrees. Check out some photos here.
What to bring:
1. Helmet mandatory. Saturdays accident would have resulted in a hospital trip if not for the riders helmet.
2. Seasonable clothing.
3. Food.
4. Water - at least 50 oz, 80 oz is better.
5. Dont forget to prep your bike the night before. Pump air in the tires (40-45 psi), lube the chain, and test the brakes.
6. Prayer
Directions:
15 North
Exit W. Bernardo Dr. & Pomerdo Rd. Turn Left on Pomerdo Rd.
Go about a 1/4 mile and turn right into the dirt parking lot. There's a brown wooden sign that says Bernardo Bay Natural Area".

SWEETWATER LAKE
Are you ready for a SWEET RIDE in Southern San Diego???? How about Sweetwater Reservoir??? (Yes, it hurt writing it too!)
Sweetwater Reservoir Bonita / Chula Vista
Intermediate / Advanced Ride
What makes this ride a intermediate / advanced is the 16 mile distance and slight amount of climbing along the beautiful Sweetwater Reservoir.
The ride imediatly drops into the local canyons. After a mile of so, the trail hooks up with Sweetwater Reservoir and continues along the perimeter. The trail (all single-track) jogs up and down the lake with wide open scenery. Along the backside the trail becomes more technical and scenic. At this time of year (and with the recent rain) everything is green, lush with wild flowers blooming. The trail climbs out of Sweetwater and continues upstream next to the river. It ends looping back to the cars.
If you have good bike legs, and love putting on the miles, this is a perfect ride for you.
What to bring:
1. Helmet, of course. No helmet, No ride (we just love that head of yours!!!)
2. Water, Bring at least 60oz.
3. Dont forget food as this is a longer ride..
4. Sunscreen - this is an exposed ride and MAY get hot. (weather depending)
5. Shorts and short sleeve shirts (see previous).
6. Spare tubes.
7. Prayer.
Directions:
From the 805. Exit Bonita Road and head East.
Approx. 3 miles down Bonita Road will turn left, you will want to STAY STRAIGHT ON SAN MIGUEL ROAD. Then take a left at Summit Meadow Road. There is also a wooden sign that says Sweetwater Summit Campground. Take a left just before the Ranger booth at the sign that says Picnic & Day Use Parking. Look for the RockMTB Banner..
Hope to see you there!!!!
God bless

Tri-Canyon Trail - Coastal San Diego
Intermediates and Advanced Only
The ride starts at Bicycle Warehouse in Pacific Beach. Bicycle Warehouse is a sponsor of our ministry and offers discounts to members. The discount is 10-15% on merchandise but not bikes. If you shop there, please let them know you appreciate their support!
We park at the store and take the road (Santa Fe) North for about 1.8 miles. Since we are connecting three canyons, there will be a bit of road riding getting to each canyon. At the end of the road, we drop down and follow railroad tracks for a bit. If the water is low, we quickly cross a stream and then climb up a small hill overlooking I-5. We take this to to Rose Canyon and ride awesome single track through California Oak groves and chaparral. After a few miles we climb out of Rose Canyon, take another road and drop down to San Clement Canyon.
First we have a little fun with some steep urban assault areas. San Clement is awesome with nice technical single track and great climbs. There is one section of San Clement you've seen from 805 and 52. It's on the West side of 805 and is this nasty, steep wall, yep a hike-a-bike section. The hike is worth it though with some steep, technical downhill single track. As we slowly climb back out San Clement, it's time to hook up with Tecolote Canyon.
As we drop in Tecolote Canyon, there is some more urban assault near the top and a nice steep downhill section with a hard turn at the bottom. The ride picks up speed as the single track opens up with twists and turns. The trail opens up further for a true full speed charge out of the canyon. As we climb out, we have a bit of road to finish up with before we are back to the cars.
This trail is a true Intermediate ride. There are technical steep climbs, and technical steep drops, but nothing ridiculous. Total mileage is about 14 miles and it should take 2-3 hours depending on our pace. I ride it in 1 1/2 hours with few stops, but being in a group and having a devotional/lunch break makes it longer.
Please be ready to ride at 11:00 Sharp. If you need to purchase something in the store, we'd appreciate it if you arrive early..
